Ride

Purple mountains, clear blue skies… bitter winters, hot Julys -
Where The Great Divide, parts the big frontier -
Family owned a cow-calf ranch… since I could walk, I’d lend a hand -
Days were long… we’d just persevere -

Summers I would rope & ride... rodeos... Pioneer Pride -
Made some money… might have made a career -
All that changed without a word… flash flood came, killed half our herd -
Dad sat me down… said son: I need you here -

I don’t make the sun… I don’t make the rain -
I’m like a man tryin’ to bust a horse, with his hand caught in the reigns -
There’s a time to bet... and there’s a time to pray -
Squeeze those heels & ride, what you can’t change.

Two years ago, my Daddy died, I stuck it out right by his side -
Some tough fight... we fought it together -
Since then this drought has cut my count… hard times keep drivin’ prices down -
I can only, wish… for better weather -

I don’t make the sun... I don’t make the rain -
I’m like a man tryin’ to bust a horse, with his hand caught in the reigns -
There’s a time to bet... and there’s a time to pray -
Squeeze those heels & ride, what you can’t change.

I support my kids… I support my wife -
Bankers callin’ day & night, ain’t no kind of life -
I used to ride… maybe I still can -
By the grace of the Lord, and my V8 Ford, I’ll make Cheyenne -

Way I reckon, there’s nothing left to try.
Now I’m in the chute, I nod my brow… everything comes down to now -
And the next… 8… seconds of my life -

I don’t make the sun... I don’t make the rain -
I’m a man tryin’ to bust a bronc, with his hand held on the reigns!
There’s a time to bet... and there’s a time to pray -
Squeeze those heels & ride, what you can’t change.
