Owl

Dead of night the screen door bangs...
Dani don’t tell me that it happened again.
She walks the house, opens my door, lights stay off, she says “Shhh, no more.”
The sheets pull back, her body finds mine, we fall asleep, entwined.

Toilet flush woke me up - Dani comes out wearing too much makeup.
She forces a smile, says “Go back to sleep, don’t waste your time on me.”

An eye for an eye, a life for a life, come one morning you’ll be my wife -
The seeds are sewn, now the rain will come, leave well enough alone.

For 20 miles on 22…
I thought about what I’m about to do.
Past the fence, down the drive, I kill the engine, and step outside.
The house was quiet, the door unlocked, I found him asleep, alone in the dark.
I shot him in the shoulder, and as he bled I shot him again and split apart his head.
No more whiskey, no more cigarettes, no excuses, no regrets.

An eye for an eye, a life for a life, come one morning you’ll be my wife -
The seeds are sewn, now the rain will come, leave well enough alone.

Dead of night the screen door bangs...
Dani’s in the kitchen, with a glass in her hand.
Don’t wanna talk about what I did, just shut the light & come to bed.
When I’m gone keep me in your prayers...
I’ll watch over you, like an owl on the air -
Hear that cry in the dead of night... shhhh, it’s all alright.

An eye for an eye, a life for a life, come one morning you’ll be my wife -
The seeds are sewn, now the rain will come, leave well enough alone.
