Players of the Game

Somewhere after midnight, a single engine plane,
city lights come flashing, through the fog & rain,
I’m bouncing on the air, waiting for weather to clear.
Above the city limits, above the day to day,
above everyone I know and the games we all play,
tonight I’m flying, across the stratosphere -
and I can see everything here.

Step up to the table, and put your money down,
make a play, hope it’s your lucky day, and spin the wheel around -
And while the wheel is spinning, everyone’s the same,
no winners, no losers here, just players of the game.

Driving through the desert, on a windy winter night,
Country music coming, from the orange dashboard lights.
There’s a glow on the horizon, you can see from miles away.
Beyond the city limits, beyond the day to day,
beyond everyone I know and the games we all play,
tonight I’m driving, across the wild frontier -
and I can see everything from here.

Sometimes you’re a winner, sometimes you’re out of reach -
You can know what cards are coming, by the company they keep.

Step up to the table, and put your money down,
make a play, hope it’s your lucky day, and spin the wheel around -
And while the wheel is spinning, everyone’s the same,
no winners, no losers here, just players of the game.

I’m making my approach, got a message from the tower,
they’re asking me to circle for another half an hour,
my ride has leveled off, the weather’s beginning to clear.
Beyond the city limits, beyond the day to day,
beyond everyone I know and the games we all play,
tonight I’m driving, across the wild frontier -
and I can see everything from here.

And while the wheel is spinning, everyone’s the same,
no winners, no losers here, just players of the game.
